Tree of the Month: Japanese Cherry Blossom Trees

By Ransoms | 28th February 2022 | 4 min read

When we think of Spring, we not only imagine daffodils and crocuses bursting from the ground, but also the dazzling display of Japanese cherry blossom trees. The Japanese flowering cherry is known as the Prunus serrulata, comprising various cultivars, all with their own distinct qualities and features.
At Ransoms we stock over 30 different cultivars of Japanese Cherry Blossom trees. Our outdoor plant team will help you pick the perfect cherry blossom for your garden or patio.

The Brightest Pink

Often when you think Japanese Cherry Blossom, you think Pink. Bright pink species are often more desirable, bringing a beautiful pink display to our gardens in early Spring. Some of the brightest pink Cherry Blossom trees we have are:

  • Prunus ‘Beni-Yutaka’
  • Prunus ‘Hokusai’
  • Prunus ‘Pink Perfection’
  • Prunus ‘Kanzan’
  • Prunus ‘Asano’
  • Prunus ‘Dream Catcher’
  • Prunus ‘Kiku-shidare Zakura’
  • Prunus ‘Royal Burgundy’

Best for Patio

If you have little space or would like to specifically grow a Cherry Blossom tree in a pot, then the ‘Kojo-no-Mai‘(images below) is the one for you. This beauty does well in a container, with its unusual zig-zagging branches and masses of flowers in spring. Just as winter ends in early March, ‘Kojo-no-Mai’ bursts into life with an abundance of bright white, delicate looking little flowers with lovely pink centres. The foliage is serrated, with new foliage having a bronzed tinge and taking on a vivid orange colour in the autumn and in winter showing off it’s unusual zig-zag branches. A cherry Blossom tree to enjoy all year round.
This small bushy Fuji Cherry tree will grown an estimated height and spread of about 2 metres in 20 years. It takes well to a hard prune, allowing you to keep the shape smaller and neater if you wish.

Another great option for patio and small spaces is the Prunus Pendula (images below), a gorgeous weeping cherry blossom which does well in a container. Graceful drooping branches are covered in a dense mat of white blossom in early spring.
Like the Kojo-no-Mai can be kept small and shaped to the desired form, growing an estimated 1.5m to 2.5m in 10 years.

Best Gift

Looking for the perfect wedding or Christening gift? Prunus ‘The Bride’ is as stunning as they come and because of it’s name perfect as a wedding gift, this Cherry blossom bursts out in the most brilliant white.
As a Christening gift, the Prunus ‘Snow Shower’ or the Prunus ‘Shogetsu’ are just lovely, a gift with our future generations in mind and something to grow together with the child throughout the years.
