Plant of the Month: Lemon tree

By Evita de Vos | 3rd March 2026 | 4 min read

There is something undeniably Mediterranean about the scent of citrus blossom. While our British weather might not exactly scream “Amalfi Coast,” you’d be surprised how easy it is to grow your own Lemon trees right here at home.

By keeping them in pots, you have the flexibility to move them with the seasons, ensuring you get a bumper crop of homegrown zest.

The Ultimate Garden-to-Glass Reward

Let’s be honest: the real prize comes at the end of the day. There is no greater satisfaction than heading out to the patio, snipping a sun-ripened lemon, and slicing it fresh for your Gin and Tonic.

A store-bought lemon simply can’t compete with the aromatic oils and punchy juice of a fruit that’s spent the afternoon soaking up the sun in your own garden. It turns a standard G&T into a proper horticultural celebration.

Top Tips for a Potted Harvest

To keep your lemon tree happy enough to produce those yellow gems, follow these simple steps:

  • Sun, Sun, and More Sun: Citrus trees are sun-worshippers. Place your pot in the sunniest, most sheltered spot you have. Think south-facing walls or a bright conservatory.
  • The “Goldilocks” Watering: They hate “wet feet” but don’t like to bone dry either. Wait until the top 2–3cm of soil feels dry before giving them a thorough soak.
  • Feeding: Citrus are “hungry” plants. Use a specialist citrus fertiliser (we stock both Summer and Winter blends) to keep the leaves green and the fruit forming.
  • The Great Indoors: When the British frost arrives, your lemon tree will need a holiday. Move it into a bright, unheated porch or conservatory for the winter months to protect it from the chill.

Which Variety?

We highly recommend the ‘Meyer’ lemon. It’s slightly sweeter than your standard supermarket variety and is famously prolific in pots, meaning more garnishes for your drinks trolley!

Choosing the Right Pot

When potting up, ensure you use a container with plenty of drainage holes. Use a mix of ericaceous compost and grit to ensure the roots stay aerated and healthy.

Did you know? Citrus trees often flower and fruit at the same time, meaning your patio will be filled with an incredible sweet perfume all summer long.
